Chitradurga , Jan 6 : The Central Silk Board has urged the Centre and the Karnataka government, the largest producer of silk in the world, to extend to silk farmers all financial benefits given to agriculture and horticulture farmers, Board chairman, H Hanumanthappa said here today.
Financial benefits like interest waiver and loan at low interest rates, being given to agriculture farmers, should be extended to silk farmers, he said after inaugurating the state-level ` Reshme Krishi Mela&apos, organised by the board and the state government Sericulture Department at Maraghatta.
Reacting to the demand to set up markets where silk production was high to mitigate high transportation expenses incurred to carry cocoons to Ramnagaram and other places, he assured farmers that the government was not averse to the idea.
At the moment there were a lot of buyers in Bangalore, Mysore and nearby areas as a result of which markets have been set up there, he said.
The board intends to expand the silk market to non- traditional districts of North Karnataka region.
The quantity of silk produced in Bangalore and Devanahally was depleting and it is essential to expand business to other parts of the state, where farmers would be encouraged to take up sericulture, he said.
The board has set up the target of increasing silk production to 26000 tonnes this year from 19000 tonnes.
Around 1.53 lakh tonnes of silk were produced in the world, of which India&aposs share was around 19000 tonnes. Karnataka is the largest producer of silk in the country, with production reaching over 8000 tonnes annually, he said.
