FARMERS in Bushenyi district have been called upon to resume silk farming. The chairperson of Bushenyi Silk Farmers Association, Elioda Tumwesigye, said the Japanese had pledged to train the farmers on how to increase silk production.
While addressing the association's members on Monday at Rubaare silk factory, Tumwesigye disclosed that Japan had sponsored the training of the district entomology officer.
Tumwesigye said a trainer from Japan was in the district and was based at the Ankole Western university-Kabwohe.
He said the Japanese ambassador to Uganda recently paid a visit to the Rubaare factory to access its production capacity.
Tumwesigye, who is also the Sheema North MP, encouraged the farmers to have hope in the silk project, saying that the Japanese want to import silk products from Uganda.
He said farmers would be trained on how to manufacture silk sleds at the house-hold level as one way of promoting the cottage industry.
Tumwesigye noted that poverty can be eradicated at the house-hold level if such programmes are supported.
