BANGALORE: Silk exports from India could fall by over 50% during this fiscal in the face of the global economic slowdown. “Silk industry is as vulnerable to it (a global slowdown) as the textile industry. We hope that demand will revive soon in the major markets, notably the US, once the new administration assumes charge though the near term prospects are not too bright. Demand should pick-up over the next six to nine months,” said H Hanumanthappa, chairman, Central Silk Board.

In FY08 silk exports from India had already fallen year on year by 21% to touch Rs 2,640 crore and the board had projected this figure to touch Rs 3,800 crore. In effect Mr Hanumanthappa’s admission means that silk exports could be only around Rs 1,900 crore.

Statistics bear out Mr Hanumanthappa’s fears what with exports to US (during the period April-August 2008) standing at $55.7 million against $61.56 million for the same period in 2007.

In percentage terms, the offtake by US has shown a decline from 23.8% to 19.4% in 2008. He said the CSB was now looking at expanding the domestic market through various initiative including promotion of wild (Vanya) silks.

Mr Hanumanthappa was speaking to the media after opening the first showroom of Vanya Silk Shoppe. Vanya or wild silks comprise of four varieties — tasar, oak tasar, eri and muga. He said that the output of Vanya silks was projected to touch 5,000 tonne by the end of the XIth Plan period. “We are expanding the area under tasar cultivation in Jharkhand,” he added.

Estimates indicate that against a forest cover of 9 lakh hectares, tasar production is only in 35,000 hectares. The department is also providing disease-free tasar silkworm eggs to rearers,” said Dhirender Kumar, special secretary and director of Jharkhand’s handloom and sericulture department.

Mr Kumar said that Jharkhand was looking at more than tripling its output of Vanya silk notably tasar by the end of the XIth plan period from the current 300 tonne. The Vanya Silk Shoppe, set up by the department with support from CSB aims to popularise Vanya silks notably in non-Vanya regions like south India.
