Indian dresses and stoles woven from Kuchai silk would soon sell in shopping malls across the US and Europe, as decks have being cleared for the export of the indigenous fabric.
Through this venture, state’s silk producers are likely to increase their sale by 40-50 per cent.
Recently the handloom, sericulture and handicraft department received its first order, worth Rs 2 crore, from a Jaipur-based export house, Murarka Organic Private Limited. The department is also in touch with three other export firms in Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra for more orders.
Dhirendra Kumar, the director of handloom, sericulture and handicraft department, told The Telegraph that the department had set a target of producing 300 tonnes of silk for 2008, compared to last year’s 150 tonnes.
“After receiving the order, we decided to double our production,” he explained.
Around October, the state achieved the distinction of procuring, for the first time in the country, an “organic silk” registration for Kuchai silk — a type of silk similar to tussar — produced in its Kharsawan-Kuchai region. Kumar said that his department has now received an organic certification from the US- based Onecert Asia for export purposes.
“We have registered 3,300 farmers for the production of 3 crore organic silk cocoons that would be bred in Kharsawan and Seraikela that comprise the Kuchai region. These are two places where the organic silk is woven. We have also registered 2,300 weavers for this purpose,” Kumar said.
After receiving the organic silk certification, the state is now in a position to sell products designed in Kuchai silk at a higher price.
“We would make a profit which would be 40-50 per cent more than what we were making,” Kumar explained.
The Kuchai silk uses no chemical in its production and is original and organic produce that does not affect the environment, either.
The department is also in touch with designers of NIFT (Calcutta, Chennai, Gandhinagar) and of NID, Ahmedabad, to fashion the silk items in latest designs for the Rajasthan-based firm.
“The experts are now designing saris, salwar suits and duppatta from Kuchai silk for the first batch,” Kumar said.
In the trade fair scheduled to start from November 15, the handloom department is also going to show three documentary films related to Kuchai silk production, spinning and weaving, to increase awareness regarding the product in the state.
“There would also be a live demonstration kiosk spread across 300-400sqft,” he said.
The department has also set up 50 centres in Singhbhum for the production of organic silk.
“Through our ventures we are providing jobs to 45 women, who are earning anywhere between Rs 35,000-Rs 5,000 per month by extracting silk from cocoons,” Kumar summed up.
