India:Raw silk produce targeted at 26,000 tonnes during XIth Plan

New Delhi (PTI): Government has proposed to increase the production of four varieties of raw silk from the current 18,475 tonnes to 26,000 tonnes by the end of XIth Plan (2012).
It has identified four varieties of silk-Mulberry, Tussar, Eri and Muga-for for the purpose.
While, approving an outlay of Rs 1,476.24 crore for the XIth Plan, in the Lok Sabha on Monday, it said, the Centre's share would be Rs 661.62 crore.
The government through Central Silk Board (CSB) is implementing a centrally sponsored scheme-Catalytic Development Programme(CDP) during the XIth Plan in collaboration with the state governments, Minister of State Textile EVKS Elangovan said in a written reply.
The CSB has received proposals from different state governments for the release of funds under CDP. During the first year of the XIth Plan period (2007-08), government through CSB had sanctioned Rs 80.82 crore as its share towards the implementation of the various schemes under CDP.
"A sum of Rs 30.76 crore under CDP scheme has been released to different state governments, this fiscal," the Minister said.
The package under CDP covers three major areas, such as seed, cocoon and post-coccon sectors and will be supplemented by other components of support services which are common to all packages.
