India:Cocoon trading volume falls in traditional southern markets

Bangalore, Mar 26: Reeling cocoon transaction in major cocoon Markets in three traditional silk production states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh declined by in the first ten months of the current financial year.

In three major cocoon Markets in Ramanagaram, Siddalghatta and Kolar taluks in Karnataka, mulberry reeling cocoon transaction declined to 25,118 tonne from 29, 298 tonne during April to January 2008 while average price of CSR Hybrid declined to Rs 145 per kg from Rs 156.

Cocoon transaction in three major Markets in Dharmapuri, Coimbatore and Salem districts in Tamil Nadu remained flat at 1,234 tonne till January this fiscal year compared with 1,229 tonne in the same period a year ago.

Cocoon volume did not decline in Tamil Nadu because the state started increasing its production in the last two years by creating silk producing hubs in several districts including Krishnagiri, Erode and Dharmapuri.

In Andhra Pradesh, cocoon transaction in three major Markets in Hindupur, Dharmavaram and Madanapalle declined to 2,825 tonne from 3,238 tonne. While cocoon transaction declined, raw silk transaction increased in all silk exchanges in Karnataka.

Total trading of raw silk in all silk exchanges in Karnataka stood at 1,135 tonne, up from 1,034 tonne while it climbed to 693 tonne from 634 tonne in Bangalore silk exchange alone.
