CHENNAI: Weavers should aim to increase their turnover by innovating using technology and creating a sales and marketing network across the globe, Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy said here on Monday.
Launching a website for weavers ( www.loomworld.com ) and commissioning an X.R.F. Analyser to test the quality of the zari for customers of Chennai, he urged weavers to create an ecosystem that would provide them all the facilities they required at one place.
“People look for competitive price and quality,” he said. The website could provide data about weavers, their business, design market and the price of silk and zari, besides offering new designs using CAD-CAM. “Garment makers abroad are looking for designs for the 2008 winter season. Look at furnishing and decorative cloths, bags and scarves, using globally accepted designs. The computer has made colour matching easy. Try making lighter clothes like China and Thailand. They also make inner garments, and have taken to the cluster approach,” he told a gathering of weavers and officials of the Handlooms and Textiles Department.
There are 4.13 lakh handlooms in the State, providing jobs to 6.08 lakh weavers. Annually, the State earns Rs. 1,800 crore through the sale of handloom products.
“The turnover of the 73 silk handloom cooperative societies is Rs. 150 crore, but we can make it Rs. 500 crore or even Rs. 2,000 crore if we innovate using technology,” he said.
Member of Parliament Kanimozhi, who inaugurated the weeklong ‘pattu vizha’ (silk festival), said weaving was a skill that symbolised our culture, and that the tradition was being carried forward across generations. The commissioning of the X.R.F. Analyser and use of the geographical indication (GI) mark were ways to bring technology and tradition together, she said.
