Italian textile exports rose by 2.3 pct year-on-year to 1.6 bln euro ($2.209 bln) in the first four months of 2007, according to an analysis of local Federation of Textile, Clothing and Fashion Industries SMI-ATI.
The first data on 2007 showed a growth of the Italian sector which began recovering slowly in 2006 after five years of crisis, said the analysis, based on figures by national statistics intitute ISTAT.
Italy’s exports rediscovered the traditionally strong EU customers, Germany, with a 4.2 pct rise, and France, with a 16.4 pct increase.
Outside the EU, the Mediterranean market registered the highest growth of Italian exports, with Tunisia and Morocco’s imports of textile from Italy up 35 pct each, followed by Turkey with a 12.3 pct growth.
Despite the reduced competitiveness in the exports due to the strong euro, the Asian markets also showed a rise in the imports from Italy, with China and Hong Kong’s imports rising by 5.7 pct.
However, the growth in the exports was accompanied by a much higher growth in the imports, at 10.7 pct year-on-year between January and April 2007 for a total value of 657 mln euro ($907 mln).
The imports from China, mainly cotton and silk, accounted for one-fifth of Italy’s textile imports. The imports of Turkish textiles, two-thirds of which were products for knitwear, grew by 15.5 pct.
