India: Karnataka produced 7,883 tonne of raw silk in FY07

Bangalore, July 25: Karnataka, the highest producer of raw silk, produced 7,883 metric tonnes(MT) of raw silk during 2006-07, the Legislative Council was informed here today.
In a reply to Ms Shobha Karandlaje (BJP), Sericulture Minister S Shivanna informed the Council that the state exported silk fabric and products worth over Rs 977 crore during the same period.
The government had taken several measures to improve the quality of the silk being produced in the state.
During 2005-06, as many as 8,383 MT of raw silk was imported into the country and it was likely to rise further following an amendment to Central Silk Board Act by the Central Government, which would come into force shortly, he said.
