China and Bangladesh will work together to promote the bilateral economic relations and trade cooperation, particularly to solve the imbalance problem and to encourage investment to each other.

Chinese Assistant Minister of Commerce, Wang Chao, and Bangladeshi Finance and Commerce Advisor, Azizul Islam, expressed their desire to promote bilateral relations when meeting with each other recently, in Dhaka.

Islam said Bangladesh and China have made great progress in bilateral economic relations with a rapid growth of Bangladesh-China trade and also an imbalance between the two sides.

It reached a record level of about US$3.19 billion in 2006, 28.5 per cent higher than the previous year, with Bangladesh’s export to China amounting only about US$98.8 million.

China has granted tariff-free access to 84 items of Bangladesh commodities within the framework of the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement (AFTA), Islam said. He hoped more items like jute products, leather and textile can enjoy free duty in the future.

Islam also invited more Chinese enterprises to invest in Bangladesh in sectors like power, infrastructure construction and electrical products, promising the Bangladesh government would provide fair and equal environment.

Wang Chao, who led a large economic and trade delegation to Bangladesh, said China has paid much attention to the economic relations and trade cooperation with Bangladesh. China also noticed the imbalance and steps are taking to reducing the gap as the government is concerned about the issue.

Wang said, the 39-member purchase delegation he led will purchase Bangladesh goods worth over US$50 million. It is the biggest purchase delegation ever to Bangladesh with over 10 companies listed in China’s top 500 and some of them in world’s top 500, he added.

More competent Bangladesh enterprises are welcomed to invest in China and to attend the Guangzhou Chinese Import and Export Commodities Fair to show Bangladesh’s various products to Chinese people, Wang said. China will provide free stalls in the annual fair to developing countries including Bangladesh, he said.

Visiting representatives of the Chinese companies also signed purchase contracts worth about US$53 million with Bangladeshi counterparts, mainly to purchase leather, jute products and seafood.

During the visit, China and Bangladesh also signed the agreements on Economic and Technical Cooperation, which provides 100 million RMB (about US$13.2 million) to Bangladesh with 80 million RMB (about US$10.5 million) as non-reimbursable assistance and the left as an interest-free loan.

A Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center will be built in Dhaka, according to the agreement.
