The 16 year old association with Japan enabling superior race Bivoltine silk in India has come to an end this year with Indian experts now seeking to encourage similar growth in third countries.
The country due to sustained efforts of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) took up Bivoltine silk development in three phases in 1991. Today the country had over 3,700 farmers producing superior Bivoltine silk to the tune of 1095 tonnes (2006-07) in the traditional silk states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu,
Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir.
A one day seminar was organised here today by JICA to review the project.
JICA India representative Tomoyuki Fuji, speaking on the occasion, said the organisation would now take the assistance of Indian Sericulture scientists involved in the project for development of Bivoltine silk in other countries. As many as 17 countries would replicate the Indo-Japanese cooperation.
Under the proposed agreement, Indian experts would join JICA officials in taking up Bivoltine programmes in other South Asian regions, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, Greece, and countries in African continent, Mr Fuji said.
An agreement to this effect would be signed in August, a Central Silk Board Official told UNI.
Mr Fuji said the third phase of the project which commenced in 2002 supported the comprehensive need for large scale expansion of Bivoltine silk production in Southern States and evolve a model for bivoltine expansion to meet the growing needs of quality silk in the country.
He said besides superior quality of silk, the farmers who had taken up Bivoltine production also benefitted by considerably enhancing his income.
CSB, in its 11th plan projection, has estimated to increase production of Bivoltine silk to 2500 tonnes from the current production of a little over 1000 tonnes. The total silk production was expected to touch 26,000 tonnes from the current 18,000 tonnes.
States like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have lapped up Bivoltine silk production in a big way compared to traditional states like Karnataka. In new areas in Erode and Gobichettipalayam in Tamil Nadu the quality of Bivoltine silk production was acclaimed to be among the world's best. Out of 1095 tonnes, Karnmataka
accounted for 358 tonnes, Tamil Nadu 296 tonnes, Andhra Pradesh 193 tonnes and Jammu and Kashmir 102 tonnes, with the balance coming from other states.
Mr Fiji said the JICA projects in India were responsible for the creation of a system and identify critical inputs needed like technology, package of practices, support mechanism and development of Human Resources and extension system to sustain Bivoltine programme at field level.
