A Thai silk company, Greenville Trading Co, has been awarded the European Union's environmental quality mark, the so-called EU Flower, for its use of clean and green technology. It is the first silk firm in the world to receive the award.
Managing director Pilan Thammongkol said his firm applied clean technology at every stage of production, especially dyeing. It focuses on environmentally-friendly substances and recycling. The firm has minimised the use of dyes, a key substance in garment production, he said.
However, the most difficult change rested with staff. He had to convince workers at every production stage to believe in the possibility and benefits of environmentally-friendly production.
He said the firm was receiving more orders from Japan and European countries which attached importance to tackling climate change. Several foreign garment makers also asked to visit the firm to learn from its experience.
