Japan plans to extend antidumping duties on some polyester staple imports from South Korea and Taiwan for five years to June 2012, government officials said Tuesday.
The government will make a formal decision at a cabinet meeting on June 26, according to the officials.
In July 2002, Japan imposed antidumping duties of 6 to 13.5 pct, effective for up to five years, on certain South Korean and Taiwanese polyester staples.
As the products have continued to be sold in Japan at less than fair market value, the government is concerned that industry in Japan may suffer if the punitive tariffs are lifted, the officials said.
In fiscal 2005, Japanese imports of polyester staples from South Korea totaled 2,860 tons, and imports from Taiwan came to 84 tons.
The United States and the European Union have also slapped antidumping duties on the South Korean and Taiwanese products.
