BANGALORE, JUN 14 : Country’s silk production grew by 8.41% in financial year 2006-07 but failed to reach its set target of 21,800 tonne. The provisional figures available with the Central Silk Board show that raw silk production went up to 18,760 tonne from 17,305 tonne
Of the total production, mulberry raw silk was 16,805 tonne up 8.81% from 15,445 tonne of which superior quality bivoltine silk production comprised 1,095 tonne and crossbreed silk 15,710 tonne. Vanya silks also witnessed a 5.11% growth to touch 1,955 tonne - Tassar silk 325 tonne, Muga 115 tonne and Eri 1,515 tonne.
Earlier, the Board had set a target of 25,000 tonne per annum by the end of the plan period.
Later it went for a downward revision, fixing it at 21,800 tonne. The main reasons for the shortfall have been attributed to drought and farmers hesitating to switchover to new technologies especially in Karnataka.
India, which produces around 19,000 tonne of raw silk a year, imports close to 7,000 tonne of bivoltine silk from China to meet its demand of 26,000 tonne. To promote bivoltine silk, the Central Silk Board has been jointly implementing projects with Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) in major silk producing states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
