Davanager: The domestic silk production of around 2000 metric tons this year has made India the second largest producer of silk in the world, K M Namboodiri, head of Silk Mark Organisation of India (Bangalore) said here on April 18.
The head was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of silk cloth sale and consumer-training programme jointly organised by Silk Mark Organisation of India (Bangalore) and the Department of Textiles, BIET at Bapuji Engineering College.
He also informed that India ranked number one in consumption of silk in the world.
The main purpose of silk mark was to save customers who pay heavy prices for silk sarees and other silk dress materials from getting cheated and to test the purity of the silk threads used in silk dresses, the silk mark organisation was conducting testing quality of silk and certifying same, he pointed out.
However, traditionally the purity of silk used in cloth was tested by burning a single staple of a silk cloth and if it smelled of burning hair and the remains of the burnt piece cannot be diluted, it was considered as of pure quality.
However, in silk mark laboratory the same test was conducted and after verifying, the silk mark label would be allotted.
Up till now, total of 649 silk textile traders had obtained the silk mark membership in India.
