BANGALORE: Due to inadequate silk yarn reeling units in their local areas, sericulture farmers in Tamil Nadu are forced to sell their cocoons in Karnataka for want of remunerative prices.
Following initiatives taken by the Central Silk Board (CSB) in association with the Tamil Nadu government, the cocoon production in the state has been surging at remarkable levels for the last two years. Tamil Nadu, in particular, is marching forward in the production of superior quality bi-voltine silk, which is currently being imported from China in bulk.

Although farmers took mulberry cultivation across Tamil Nadu, it was relatively more successful in the Dharmapuri region due to salubrious weather conditions, CSB sources said. Raw silk production in Tamil Nadu almost doubled to 750 tonne compared to two years ago. The Dharmapuri belt has emerged as a cocoon cluster with a lion's share of 70% in the total cocoon production in Tamil Nadu, officials said. For farmers in these belts, the government had set up two cocoon exchanges, one each in Dharmapuri and Hosur.

Talking to FE, a Hosur-based raw-silk twisting unit owner, Ravi, said that the farmers in the bordering districts of Tamil Nadu were forced to sell their cocoons in Asia's largest cocoon exchange in Ramanagaram, a tiny town in Karnataka that houses thousands of reeling units. He said that farmers were getting premium prices in the Ramanagaram exchange compared to Hosur and Dharmapuri.

Currently, the cocoon prices are hovering around Rs 150 per kg in the Ramanagaram market, while, the produce fetch only around Rs 110 in the exchanges in Dharmapuri and Hosur. Due to higher prices, farmers in the bordering districts of Tamil Nadu transport atleast 2,000 kg of cocoons every day to Karnataka.

Enquiries by FE revealed that only around 50 to 70 reeling units operate in the Dharmapuri-Hosur region, lowering demand for cocoons produced in the region. Many farmers complain that the government has taken steps to increase the cocoon production in Tamil Nadu, but it failed to create local demand for the produce.
