Koraput: Sericulture farmers have been earning handsome amounts in many states and the trend has begun in Orissa with the cultivation of better varieties of mulberry, B.K. Nayak, Deputy Director of Textiles, Bhubaneswar, has said. Dr. Nayak was speaking at the State-level sericulture farmers' workshop here on Friday. "There is market for silk worth Rs. 6 crores in the State every year, which is tapped by farmers through 63 cooperatives," he said. The four demonstration farms in the district, which had been neglected for the last few years, would now be taken up for betterment. A sum of Rs.14 lakhs would be spent to create awareness among farmers, Dr. Nayak said. Since its inception at Landiguda in 1987, the Regional Sericulture Research Station (RSRS) here had been developing new techniques of plantation and improved varieties of mulberry after studying the requirements of local farmers, K.M. Purohit, a scientist at RSRS, said. District Collector Mrinalini Darswal was the chief guest.
