The concept of silk mark, which helps consumers identify authentic silk products, is catching on in Tamil Nadu, according to T Sivakumar, executive, Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI).
He said the concept, which was introduced in Chennai in September 2004, was gaining popularity among manufacturers as well as traders of silk sarees, fabrics and allied products.
So far, 5,500 members from across the country have enrolled themselves in the organisation, of which 463 have enlisted themselves as authorised users of silk mark for bulk trading and retail selling.
In Tamil Nadu alone, about 12.63 lakh silk mark labels have been distributed till October 31, 2006. Silk Mark comes with a printed card and a hologram. The Central Silk Board is hosting awareness programmes with the help of consumer forums, NGOs and women's groups for popularising the concept, Sivakumar said.
SMOI is a Bangalore-based society registered under the Karnataka Societies Act, 1960. It is sponsored by the Central Silk Board, which functions under the direct control of the Textile ministry.
The organisation has come out with a silk mark quality manual and has fixed separate fee structures for its members, the parameters of which depend on the business turnover of the members.
