In an effort to give a shot in the arm to the silk industry in the state, the Karnataka government has cleared a proposal to set up a park for the silk industry.
The proposed park will be set up at an area spread over 50-60 acres at Anekal near Bangalore.
According to T V Maruthi, chairman, Indian Silk Export Promotion Council (ISEPC), the state's single window agency approved the project at a meeting recently. The silk park will provide land to 150 silk weaving mills in the state.
The project is expected to see an investment in excess of Rs 40 crore. This is in addition to an existing powerloom park in Doddaballapur, which will house textile units, he told reporters.
He said 40 per cent of the cost of the project will be funded by the Centre, while the rest will be pooled in by the silk mills. A special purpose vehicle ?Bangalore High-tech Weaving Park Ltd ?has been formed to implement this silk park.
The silk park will provide land for setting up integrated silk mills for producing silk fabric. It will have facilities like silk twisting, weaving, dying, processing and marketing.
There will be a common infrastructure like an effluent treatment plant. The silk park will provide employment to about 3,000 persons, he said.
Maruthi said each of the silk mills being set up at this park, would invest in the range of Rs 2-3 crore for 12 machines. The park will house imported silk looms and high-tech machinery, he said adding that the park would help develop ancillary units in and around Bangalore.
He said tenders have been finalised for the construction of buildings at the Powerloom Park at Doddaballapur, near Bangalore, which is also being set up at an investment of Rs 40 crore. It will house 150 units and provide employment to 3,000 persons.
