1,000 saris from 15 co-operative societies on display
On offer is a total of 20 per cent discount

CHENNAI: A six-day handloom silk sari exhibition that opened on Friday showcases new designs from the weavers' co-operative societies in Kancheepuram.
On display are over 1,000 saris from about 15 co-operative societies. The saris are priced between Rs.2,000 and Rs.40,000 and include embroidered varieties. The new arrivals do not sport the designs traditionally associated with Kancheepuram silk saris.
A total of 20 per cent discount, including a special rebate of 10 per cent, is on offer. On saris made two years, a 45 per cent discount will be offered. Handlooms Minister N.K.K.P. Raja inaugurated the exhibition at Sankara Hall, Alwarpet. "It [exhibition] is an effort to help the co-operatives sell their stock. Of the 70 co-operative societies in the State, 23 are in Kancheepuram. The exhibition will help the 13,000 weaver families there," said M.R. Mohan, Commissioner of Handlooms and Textiles.
With changing tastes and poor sales, about Rs.109 crore worth silk saris have not been sold. The discounts are expected to clear the backlog, he added.
Next week, the department proposes to conduct an exhibition at Lalit Kala Akademi. Around 1,500 new designs in saris, kurtas and churidar sets, besides cotton shirts for men would be on display.
A special pavilion would provide space for silk saris left over from the on-going exhibition.
