TEHRAN, Jan. 5 (MNA) -- Strict supervision over the production and supply and demand ratio in Iran’s silk industry has increased the prices in domestic markets by 50 percent compared to the last year.
Increased by between 40 to 50 percent, the price of every kilogram of silk thread grew from the Rls.170,000 in the past year to Rls.260,000 in the current year, managing director of the government-run Iran Silkworm Breeding Co. Ltd. noted on Friday.
The prices of silk cocoons surged by 27 to 30 percent, and took a leap from Rls.74,000 per kg in the past month to Rls.94,000 in the current month, Farzam Purramezan said.
He also stipulated that the prognosis for the commodity market in the next year is also going to be good.
Silk production is an ancient trade in Iran and there are many facilities available for silkworm breeding nationwide. In 1999, of the 200,000 silkworm egg packs needed by domestic breeders, domestic suppliers provided about 160,000 boxes and the remaining one-fifth was obtained from foreign markets.
The Chinese people were the first to engage in the production of silk, in the third millennium BC. As the Silk Road traversed Iranian territory, the Iranian people were among the first to learn the trade, gaining global fame for their silk items. During the Sassanid era, in the 5th and 6th century AD, silk production was a booming business in Iran.
Iranian factories and workshops produce 900 tons of silk, which is equivalent to only nine percent of their nominal capacity. The figure can reach 10,000 tons per year.
Currently, the bulk of silk products is used for carpet weaving.
