KOLKATA, APR 24 : West Bengal is in the process of preparing a textile policy to revamp the state of affairs in the sector and promote brand Bengal.
Manab Mukherjee, the state's small industries and tourism minister, said the cabinet has agreed to draft a textile policy for the state.
He was talking to reporters after the inaugural ceremony of Texvision 2007.
Of the Rs 50,000 crore market in Bengal, 10-15% is produced in the state. The government hopes that with the proposed policy in place, the textile industry of the state will gear up for a bigger share of the pie. Every possibility is being explored to attract big investors, Mukherjee said.
The government is working on a commissionerate for the textile industry. So far, the ministry of commerce and industry has looked after textiles. Work on the draft will commence only after the body is in place.
The government has decided to put three directorates---handloom, sericulture & silk, and garment & value-added textile products---under the proposed body.
"We hope to have the policy within a few months," said Mukherjee.
The Union Textile Policy, 2000 is aimed at helping the textile industry attain and sustain a pre-eminent global standing in the manufacture and export of clothing. It is also aiming to liberalise controls and regulations.
"We are trying to develop and promote brand Bengal," said the minister.
