India : Silk turnover touches 2,000 tons

K M Namboodiri, head of Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI) inaugurated the silk cloth sale and consumer training programme organised by SMOI Bangalore and the Department of Textiles, at Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology (BIET) on April 17.

According to Namboodiri, India stands second in world in silk production and number one in consumption. Its turnover this year has touched 2,000 metric tons.

The main purpose of silk mark is to save customers from getting cheated while purchasing silk sarees and dress materials. To test the purity of silk threads, SMOI conducts quality testing, certifies it and then silk mark label is allotted.

In India, 649 silk textile traders have obtained the silk mark membership among them Davanagere B S Chennabasappa, Gangavathi Silks and Aruna silks are prominent.
