KANCHEEPURAM: Technological Research Institute, under the Central Silk Board has decided to commence a modern testing centre in Kancheepuram.

The facility of testing centre has been launched under Central Textile Ministry’s Textile Centres Infrastructure Development Scheme (TCIDS).

The testing centre will be inaugurated by E V K S Elangovan, Union Minister for State for Textiles on Sunday.

It would cater to needs of manufacturers, spinners, twisters, weavers and the consumers with a wide range of silk and zari testing facilities.

The project will incur an expenditure of around Rs1 crore, of which Rs60 lakh is funded by the TCIDS and Rs40 lakh by Cental Silk Board, according to Dr Hari Raj, Deputy Director, Silk Conditioning and Testing House.

The aim of the testing centre is to provide a comprehensive testing service at a low cost and identify spurious and low quality silk sarees.

The testing facility would help sari manufacturer to disclose if a weaver is using same inputs provided to him, master weaver may confirm quality of silk yarn or zari provided to him and consumers too could test the saree bought by him.
