Bangalore: The Central Sericulture Research and Training Institute (CSRTI) have developed a unique hybrid CSR 50 X CSR51 silkworm named Chamaraja having more tolerance feature to diseases and high temperature than older hybrid.
The top official of CSRTI expects that the new hybrid to be a complementary to the Indian silk industry, which has been facing several hurdles due to China's domination in the domestic and overseas market.
The developed bi-voltine hybrid CSR18 x CSR 19 earlier for rearing in summer under high temperature conditions was low on productivity and so the farming community did not welcome this hybrid.
However, the new hybrid Chamaraja developed has the potential to be reared throughout the year; whereas the parental breeds of Chamaraja were evolved utilising temperature/disease tolerant breeds and Japanese hybrids as resource materials.
Also the cocoon uniformity and boil-off loss were also evaluated while evaluating the new hybrid both at room and high temperature conditions.
The result of the above mention testing resulted that Chamaraja was superior to the existing hybrids in terms of both quantity and quality.
