Tamil Nadu government is going ahead with plans to increase production of silk significantly.
To work towards this end, acreage under mulberry cultivation is being increased along with raising cocoons production, setting up of hi-tech reeling centres in private, public and co-operative sectors, expanding multi-end reeling mills in operation and revive closed down units.
Raw silk production made a leap in 2000-01 with Mulberry cultivation undertaken in over 27,600 acres in 2000-01 in Salem, Erode, Dharmapuri, Coimbatore, Dindugal, Namakkal and other districts in Tamil Nadu, had helped increase raw silk production drastically.
Home-based, cottage industry-level and multi-end reeling units were set up to process and reel cocoon in the state.
Proposal have been put up to reopen closed reeling units, especially muli-end units and set up fully automatic units said Pongalur Palanisami, State Rural Industries Minister.
