Mahatma Gandhi’s charkha (spinning wheel) a museum item, is being put to use by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) to train rural residents to spin cotton on indigenous charkha for livelihood.

KVIC has put up an exhibition of rare models of charkha used by Gandhiji at Khadi Gramodhyog Pradarshani at Ardh Kumbh Mela.

'Sudarshan Chakra' spinning wheel exclusively used by Gandhiji and 'Yarvada Chakra', which he designed in Yarvada jail (Maharashtra) are also being exhibited along with Kisan Charkha, Bamboo Charkha and Amber Charkha that can spin 35,000-40,000 metres of cotton thread in eight hours.

Cotton spinning on these charkhas is also undertaken by KVIC staff to convey to people its importance to revive rural economy.

KVIC Development Officer Sugreev Ram informed that Rs 50 can be earned daily by spinning cotton on Amber Charkha with spinning of woolen, silk and muslin threads undertaken by modification of spinning wheels.

Design of Bamboo and Kisan Charkha is so simple that people can make it themselves for self-employment thereby strengthening rural economy and making villages financially independent which was Gandhiji's dream, informed Gandhi Ashram trainer Moti Chand Sharma.
