Bangalore:Karnataka is the world's second largest producer of silk and is particularly known for Mysore Silk.
The Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) has now received a patent for marketing of the famous silk sari.
Meanwhile, competition is forcing Karnataka's largest silk manufacturer to weave a new identity.
Company officials admit that government-owned KSIC is going to be nationalised in less than six months and in keeping with that, it is going in for a new look.
"We are planning to change our logo. Mysore Silk is a heritage product and according to GI registration, we must go with the heritage of Mysore. We will plan changes of the logo within a month," said S Philomenraj, Manager, Marketing.
Promoting Mysore Silk
Mysore Silk, as the name indicates, is specific to this area of Karnataka and KSIC received proprietorship of the Geographical Indication for Mysore Silk earlier this year.
This makes it amongst one of the first companies in the country to get a GI.
"We are the early manufacturers of this kind of fabric since 1932. Here the work is twisted in two directions - S and Z - which gives a grainy effect on the fabric. So we said we should get GI for Mysore Silk. The GI people were satisfied and they have given it to us," said T S Rajkumar, General Manager, KSIC.
The first Mysore Silk sari was rolled out in 1912, but age doesn't seem to have taken the shine off this sari.
With several methods like digital printing technology and exhibitions to promote the sari, it's ensuring it finds a market amongst the younger generation as well.
