Varanasi, November22:The CITY weavers on Wednesday held China responsible for their miseries.
They said it was because of dumping of cheap Chinese silk fabric in Varanasi that they were facing the problem.
The weavers urged the visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao to ensure complete ban on export of Chinese silk fabric to India.
Talking to HT, said Ashok Dawan, patron of the Banaras Vastra Udyog Sangh said, “The export of Chinese silk fabric has ruined the weavers of India, especially of Banaras and its adjoining districts.”
He said over four lakh weavers in the district and its adjoining lost their jobs.
It happened due to import of cheap Chinese fabric in the Indian market, he added. “Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh should prevail upon the Chinese premier to reduce the cost of its raw silk so that its use in different parts of India could ensure employment to the weavers,” he added.
“In Banaras alone, 60 per cent of weavers have become jobless,” said Haji Maqbool Hassan Ansari, Member the India Handloom Board.
He said, “If China really wants to enhance its relations with India, it should make raw silk available in India at cheaper rates and ban export of fabric to India.”
The Government of India needs to impose anti-dumping duty on Chinese fabric, he added.
An NGO Human Welfare Association, working for weavers’ welfare in Banaras said duplicate and original silk from China severely affected Karnataka, Varanasi and some parts of West Bengal. Quoting figures, NGO president Dr Rajnikant said once there were 75,000 handlooms in Varanasi. Now, it would be difficult to locate 20,000 handlooms in the district, he added. “I support total ban on export of raw silk and even fabric from China, as our silk producers in India have adopted producing tomatoes due to recession in Indian weaving trade,” Dr Rajnikant said.
