KANCHEEPURAM: Minister for Handlooms N K K P Raja conducted surprise checks at 18 silk showrooms here on Tuesday in the wake of complaints that the sale of fake silk fabrics is on the rise.

The Minister visited the Aringar Anna Self-Help Group Silk Cooperative showroom on Kamarajar Road and questioned the manager if self-help groups manufactured the silk sarees sold there. He also checked the documents and found that they were fake.

The showroom manager refused to divulge his name and told the Minister that the stocks had been outsourced to private weavers. The Minister pulled out a few sarees from the shelf and ordered officials to test their quality.

He also advised the officials to initiate action against all spurious manufacturers of silk sarees in Kancheepuram.

Raja said it was unfortunate that Aringar Anna's name was being misused. (It may be noted that there is a traditional cooperative society named after the late chief minister at Kancheepuram, which manufactures and markets silk products).

The Minister then visited the Tamil Nadu Zari Limited, a State Government undertaking, where he reviewed the financial performance and production operations of the organisation.
