COIMBATORE: The production of bivoltine silk species in Udumalpet is on rise, as the yield of cocoon is higher after 60 percent of the farmers has opted for sericulture, Mr I Devasagayam, Assistant Director, Department of Sericulture, Udumalpet said here on July 03.

The director also clarified that of the 1200 sericulture farmers in the region, 650 are currently raising bivoltine silk species.

Further the suitable weather conditions and fair amount of rainfall is the added advantage in the progression of sericulture in the region.

Also the rising demand for silk cocoon and raw silk played a role in farmers increasing mulberry acreage, as silkworms feeds on these mulberry leaves.

The director also added that recently a regional research co-ordination conducted a meeting, where a discussion was held on giving further promotion to growing sericulture.

However a sericulture farmers' school was also proposed at the meeting to spread latest cultivation technology and promoting contract farming of sericulture.

Further silk reeling units were also urged at the meeting.
