India: Silk board plans PPP to increase non-mulberry silk production
HYDERABAD: The Central Silk Board (CSB) is planning to rope in corporates for contract farming as part of the public-private partnership (PPP) programme in a bid to increase non-mulberry silk production, H Hanumanthappa, chairman, CSB said here on November 08.
He further informed that CSB is expected to hold its first meeting with corporates during the first week of December following the study done by the CII and IIM on the sericulture industry.
The corporate bigwigs such as ITC, Reliance and Godrej are keen to enter sericulture, especially for Vanya silk, in a big way, with new business models.
However, CSB has already signed a MoU with Jayant Oil Mills in Gujarat for castor cultivation which aids in eri culture, while CSB in association with the Andhra government has also signed an MoU with Bangalore-based Indo Silk for setting up a spinning mill at Hindupur in Anantapur district.
Under this partnership, about 100 tons of eri cocoons (eri silk is also used in denim fabric) are expected to be produced during 2006.
Eri silk is produced by eri silkworm and these worms relish castor leaves and can be spun evenly and in fine counts and has high warmth retention as Eri culture is mainly confined to states in North Eastern India.
In fact, development of Vanya silks is of special interest to CSB which is lending technological support to ensure that these filaments do not lose their natural characteristics.
The production base in this sector has been strengthen after non-mulberry silk development project was undertaken by CSB with UNDP assistance about five years ago.
