NEW DELHI: The Indian manufacturing sector witnessed a steady growth in capacity utilisation in the previous fiscal despite tough competition from China and Thailand, Assocham said.

The overall capacity utilisation of the industrial sector in 2005-06 is estimated to have increased to 82.7 per cent as compared to 82.2 per cent in 2004-05, the industry body said in a statement.

However, sectors like leather and leather fur products, and non-metallic mineral products witnessed a decline in capacity utilisation, it said.

"There has been a sharp increase especially in textile to 92.7 per cent from 81.5 per cent, beverages, tobacco and products to 84.9 per cent from 77 per cent, cotton textiles to 97.4 per cent from 91.4 per cent and in paper and printing products to 88.7 per cent from 82.5 per cent," Assocham President Anil Agarwal said.

There has been a negative growth in capacity utilisation in leather and leather and fur products sector, by 5.76 per cent to 79.9 per cent from 84.5 per cent, followed by non-metallic mineral products, falling 3.58 per cent and in metal products and parts by 3.2 per cent.

Agarwal said the manufacturing Industry has shown a slight improvement in capacity utilisation from its previous figure of 80.4 per cent in 2004-05 to 80.8 per cent in 2005-06.

Capacity utilization in sectors like cotton textiles, wool, silk and man-made fibres, and textile products is estimated to be above 90 per cent, the statement said.
