CHENNAI: The Silk Mark Organisation of India will soon introduce a feature to help customers choose the sari they require. The length of a sari and washing instructions for the garment would also be provided along with the Silk Mark label.

Traders who have been authorised to use the Silk Mark would be required to specify instructions for the garments' care. For instance, they would have to spell out whether the colour is likely to run or whether the sari should only be hand-washed. This requirement will be in place from October 1, 2006, Silk Mark officials here said.

A team from Silk Mark's Chennai chapter visited two major silk textile stores in T. Nagar on Thursday to judge a Silk Mark popularisation contest. The team will visit 20 stores in different parts of Tamil Nadu before finalising the winner.

"The Silk Mark has become very popular in Tamil Nadu. About 7.5 lakh labels out of the total 11 lakh issued in the country have gone to traders in Tamil Nadu," said P.M. Pandi, Silk Mark Deputy Director (Inspection). The staff of textile outlets are given training in identifying genuine silk.

"A customer may buy a sari and, on reaching home, find that it is not long enough. We hope to avoid this by having the length specified," said Silk Mark executive V. Ramesh. He said that silk garments be wrapped in cotton cloth when they are stored and not in polythene packets or cardboard boxes.

In Chennai, 10 textile showrooms have adopted the Silk Mark while the total figure in Tamil Nadu is 117. The Silk Mark Organisation had initiated a popularisation festival, which is to conclude on April 30, in the showrooms of authorised users. Hence, these showrooms have prominently displayed the Silk Mark `butterfly' logo.

The most creatively decorated showroom will be recognised with a cash award.
