India:Silk farming booming in the state

BELGAUM: The Central Silk Board has setup various plans to promote the sector in the region including subsidies for Malbari plantation, fertilisers, laboratory, research, marketing and more, President of the Central Silk Board Hanumanthappa said here on February 02.

The president said, as the region had good yield of silk and silk yarns, the northern part of the state was responding well in silk farming and trading. Further the farmers who use to get 87 kg of Malbari per acre are now been able to yield more than 100 kg and 60 kgs of silk yield from 100 eggs are now increased to more than 85 kgs, has been resulted in quality and productivity in this part of the state.

Further the board said that the world growth of silk stand at 1.17 lakh metric tons, out of which the country has share of 16500 metric tons which is not been able to satisfy the need and so an additional 26000 tons of silk yarns as to be produced.

The research and technology plays an important role in the sector as a result of which the board had projected Rs.183 crore out of which Rs.68 crore was to spent on this and the balance was allotted for developing grants which will be given by the state government.
