BANGALORE, DEC 15: The Central Silk Board (CSB) has said that the sericulture cultivation should be covered under crop insurance to boost the Indian silk industry.

In his inaugural speech during the 20th Congress of the International Sericultural Commission (ISC), CSB chairman H Hanumanthappa said that crop insurance was an urgent need to cover the losses owing to unpredictable monsoon and drought and also mortality of silkworms due to epidemics. He appealed to the government to cover the sericulture industry under market intervention and to fix a minimum support price for the crop. Currently India produces 16,500 tonne of silk while nearly 9,000 tonne are being imported from other countries.

Even though the WTO era has opened up the market, he urged ISC that there should be certain code of conduct between the participating countries to take care of the interest of developing countries, where millions of people depend on sericulture industry.

He also said that the India silk researchers should find out suitable mulberry variety suiting drought, alkaline, acidic and water logging conditions. Robust silkworm races are yet to be evolved for high temperature, high humidity and disease prone regions.

In the 20th Congress of ISC, which comprises 14 countries including India and France, more than 250 silk researchers are expected to present their findings. The Congress would also discuss about the silk trade between ISC member countries.
