MYSORE: The Central Sericultural and Training Institute here has claimed that there is no dearth of silkworm breeds in the country.

Director of CSTRI, S B Dandin said here on Saturday, that the silkworm breeders of the Institute have succeeded in developing highly productive bivoltine hybrid CSR2-CSR4, which in ruling the Indian sericulture industry for the past 10 years as the reelers produced one Kg raw silk form 6 kg of green cocoon (renditta).

Denying the statement of retired joint director Sadanand that silk has been imported from China due to lack of silkworm breeds and hybrids, he said that CSR2-CSR4 produces better quality silk than Chinese silk.

He added that CSTRI, during 2003-04, had reared the popular Chinese hybrid. Farmers, however, incurred losses as the Chinese hybrid failed to deliver products.

He said that the institute had contributed multi-bivoltine hybrids such as Mysore KA, Mysore NB4D2 and Mysore CSR2 (Kolar Gold).

The Institute has further developed many multi-bivolitine hybrids for better quality silk and gained appreciation from the farmers also.

While, the SCR2 (Nandi) breed developed by the Institute has gained lot of appreciation from Silkworm Egg producers, he said.

Dandin said 8 per cent of the total raw silk produced in India was from the bivoltine hybrids and Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have reared more than lakhs of disease free layings of double hybrid and Gen hybrid throughout the year.
