Over the last two years, Italian silk industry increased sales to China both in terms of quantity and value. After the increase recorded in 2004, Istat figures for the first semester of 2005, show that silk exports increased by 186.7pct in value (237.49 in quantity) to China, and by 50.1pct (53.53pct in quantity) towards Honk Kong. International exports increased by 11.14pct after an increase of 7.2pct in 2004. What strikes the most is the competitive skills of Italian silk businessmen, mainly based in the Como area, in the Chinese market, often considered as a threat rather than as an opportunity. Similar results can be observed in the near by market of Honk Kong. The Chinese markets and those of the former British protectorate are overcoming the Japanese ones, that is the traditional destination of Italian production.
