HINDUPUR: The rise in the prices of raw materials for silk sarees has severely affected the handloom industry in the region and weavers are a worried lot. The price of silk yarn, which was Rs 1,200 per Kg, has gone up to Rs 1,700.

Though there is spike in the prices of raw materials, silk saree prices have remained the same.

As a result weavers, protesting, have stopped producing silk sarees for the last one week in Dharmavaram, Somandepalle, Chennekothapalle and Gorantla and have taken to the streets demonstrating against the hike in the prices of silk yarn. Two weavers in Dharmavaram have been on an indefinite fast since Monday.

There are 25,000 weavers dependent on silk weaving ?the number is 10,000 in Hindupur, 6,000 in Somandepalle and the rest in other areas.

Over 1.5 lakh people depend on the silk handloom industry. Out of the 221 weavers societies in the district, 170 belong to silk weavers.

In Dharmvaram alone business in silk sarees to the tune of Rs 5 to Rs 8 crore takes place every day and even the silk yarn business runs into crores of rupees.

But with the gradual decline in production of silk sarees in the region, traders are turning elsewhere.

Weavers say even though the quality of Dharmavaram silk sarees is on par with Kanchi silk sarees their product has not gained the recognition due to it and blame the textile department for this.

Except conducting handloom exhibitions, the Handloom and Textiles Department is not taking any steps to address the problems of the weavers, they allege.
