BANGALORE: Silkmark Organisation of India, a body sponsored by the Central Silk Board is looking at the possibility of taking ’Silkmark’ global.

Silkmark, which is similar to Woolmark is a labeling mechanism which aims to assure consumers about the purity for natural silk products. Anyone who wishes to become a bona-fide user of ’Silkmark’ has to become a member of the organisation. All licensed members of the organisation can then become authorised users of Silkmark.

Speaking to media, Ms Vandana Kumar, CEO of SMOI said that a presentation on Silkmark had been made at the recently concluded conference of the International Sericultural Commission at Bangalore.

“Currently countries like Japan, Greece and Thailand have their own Silkmark. Our presentation highlighted the aim of SMOI since it came into existence over a year ago. The global body is due to meet within the next six months at Lyon and expect some action to happen as regards our Silkmark,” she added.

Ms Kumar said that SMOI also planned a pan-India rollout of Silkmark. Currently Silkmark-certified products are available in markets like Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Besides rolling it out in Kolkata, Silkmark-certified products would also be available in markets like Delhi and Varanasi shortly, Ms Kumar said.India, is the world’s second largest producer of silk with an annual production of about 16,000 tonnes.
