NEW DELHI:The government has decided to amend the Central Silk Board Act, 1948 in a bid to tackle the imminent threat of the import of diseased silkworm seed with the dismantling of tariff barriers.

The official sources said on September 9 that the amendments aimed at regulating production, supply, distribution, trade of silkworm seeds and other related matters.

As per the amendments, a silkworm seed committee will be constituted under the Central Silk Board (CSB) to authorise the varieties and races for sale, and set standards for seed production facilities.

The committee will also license, supervise and regulate seed production, supply, distribution, trade along with the export and import of seeds.
