With transportation of goods stalled for the last one week, the floods in Mumbai have virtually left the Bargur textile market high and dry.
The Bargur Textile Marketing Complex (BTMC) in Krishnagiri district, which was established in 1983 by private textile merchants, has close trade links with Mumbai.
About 400 wholesale textile distributors are members in the BTMC. They procure textile materials from Mumbai, Surat and New Delhi in bulk and in turn, the retailers in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka get their textiles from the BTMC.
Mumbai remains BTMC major choice as the wholesalers procure readymade clothing for nearly Rs 10 crore every month.
However, the current floods caused by heavy rains in Mumbai had cut trade links between Bargur and Mumbai. And now, the entire Bargur textile market looks dry due to the shortage of textile supply from Mumbai.
BTMC president Chinnappan said that the rain in Mumbai had completely hampered the textile business in Tamil Nadu. About 20,000 retailers across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka had been procuring goods from the BTMC every day.
But, due to inadequate stocks in BTMC, it could not meet the requirements of the customers, Chinnappan said, adding that it would take another 15 days to receive goods from Mumbai.
Though BTMC members could procure materials from another major textile city, Ahmedabad, its distance is about 1,000 kilometres more than Mumbai.
Currently, due to inadequate business in the BTMC, the floating population in Bargur has been reduced to a trickle, hitting many small businesses in the town.
