BEIJING: The College of Biotechnology of Southwest University in Chongqing Municipality, southwest China has successfully produced colorful silk cocoons by using gene engineering technology.
The researchers at Southwest University have recently made it successful in producing colorful silk cocoons. This marks a landmark breakthrough for the research team after two years of hard work.
The university displayed its research results on November 08 2007, with cocoons in orange, pink, light yellow, light green, rusty red and white.
The colorful cocoons in the past were produced either through dying or from feeding silkworms colored feeding. Silk produced from such cocoons tend to lose color in time, unlike silk produced from the new gene engineered cocoons.
