Zhejiang provinces’s silk product export slided 24.2 percent compared to the previous year to 68.17 million meters in 2006.

The province’s silk export to India suffered a most tremendous setback to 19.09 million meters, down 48.2 percent year-on-year.

The province’s silk export fell sharply as a result of the following factors: The silk export to India, which accounted for almost one third of the province’s total silk export, dropped to a sharp margin due to the shadow of the imposition of anti-dumping duties on silk fabric from Indian government; As the continuously booming price in raw silk during the second half of last year soared the cost of silk prosucts, some enterprises kept sideline and watched; Most of the province’s silk export has been concentrated in preliminary-processed, low-added-value products lack of owned brand names.

In a long run, it’s necessary for silk enterprises to increase export as well as exploit domestic market. It is China's fundamental stand and long-term strategic guiding principle to expand domestic demand. Since the people's income level is increasing and their consumption structure is being upgraded, the silk industry shall rely more on domestic demand for its stable development.
