The eastern province of Zhejiang is known as the "hometown" for silk in China. On Wednesday, tens of thousands of farmers gathered in the town of De Qing for a festival to celebrate the beginning of the silk worm growing season, and wish for bountiful silk harvests.

Slabs of wood used for raising silkworms are carried as props in the parade. And the "dragon" on display in this dance consists of mulberry leaves, which silk worms use for nourishment.



In this game, young girls dressed as fairies, toss colored paper flowers to people in the crowd. The custom comes from a local legend. And those lucky enough to catch the flowers are bound to welcome a heavy harvest of silk.

Other contests include running while carrying the wooden slabs, and using grass to weave abodes for silkworms to make their cocoon.

The center of the festival, De Qing, is a key silk producing base in the northern part of Zhejiang. And when the fun of the festival is over, the hard work of raising the silkworms begins.
