After more than two thousand years, the silk trade is once again flourishing along the Silk Road in Xinjiang. This year almost 800 tons of silk have been exported from Xinjiang, worth over 20 million US dollars
The Silk Road is the inland trade route that crossed Asia in ancient times, linking Africa and Europe. It was an important thoroughfare for economic, political and cultural exchange between eastern and western countries.
Customs reported that between January and November, China exported 765 tons of silk from Xinjiang to Pakistan, at a value of US$24 million.
The increase in export volume has benefited the "Mulberry Transfer from the East to the West", a project that was implemented this year to encourage and support the development of silk trade in the mid-western part of China, and to promote the healthy development of China's silk industry.
A spokesperson from Urumchi Customs said that based on this year's export figures, greater profits are being made from silk exports. This year, the average unit price for silk exported from Xinjiang is US$1.80 per meter, up 5.9 percent from last year. According to tests, most of the silk is of a good quality, with the percentage of silk in the fabric higher than 85 percent. This reflects the ongoing optimization of the Chinese silk industry and its increase in added value.
