The area’s worst drought in the historic record has resulted in a great loss of summer and autumn cocoon crops in Southwest China’s Sichuan province and Chongqing Municipality Region. The shortage of raw silk material supply has a direct influence on the market sentiment of the second half of this year.

According to new figure, the cocoon output in Sichuan till August has decreased by 30-50 percent over the same period last year.

Condition appears more severe in Chongqing. The drought has affected 700,000 mus of mulberry land. The cocoon output in the region is estimated to drop by 70 percent from last year’s figure, which has resulted in an economic loss of 190 million RMB yuan ( 23.8 million US dollars).

Under such condition, the rise in silk commodities continues. The price of planted reeled silk has risen to 250,000 yuan from last year’s 235,000 yuan per ton.
