BANGALORE, JULY 18: China is looking at collaborations with India in certain areas of sericulture industry. This surprising indication came from Chinese trade delegates who met Karnataka sericulture minister and the department officials on Monday. Talking to FE, Aravind Jannu, director of Karnataka sericulture department, said Karnataka government is interested in obtaining Chinese technology in silk races and reeling sectors.

India already has collaborations with Japan and has developed certain bivoltine races from Japanese silk races. As a majority of sericulture industry in India is covered in tropical states, original races from temperate climate of Japan are tropicalised before being released into field for bivoltine silk production in India, Jannu said.


But China has succeeded in developing silkworm races suitable for tropical region, he said, adding that the dragon country has more than 400 races for bivoltine silk production while India has only four to five races like CSR II and CSR IV.

With the silkworm races currently available in India, it is possible to get cocoon filament to a maximum length of 800 metres while Chinese silk races are capable of producing 1,400 metres long filament, Jannu added. He also said that the Karnataka government has sought technical assistance from Chinese delegates to upgrade the silk reeling sector.

Karnataka accounts for 50% of Indian silk production with close to 85,000 hectares under mulberry cultivation. Around 1.8 lakh families are involved in silkworm rearing, producing 54, 210 tonne of cocoon every year, while 12, 670 skilled labourers are engaged in silk reeling.
