On March 28th, National Work Meeting on Cocoon and Silk Production sponsored By Ministry of Commerce was held in Nanning. Mr. Guo Shengkun, Vice-secretary of the CPC Guangxi Committee and Executive Vice-governor of Guangxi, and Mr. Huang Hai, Assistant Minister of Ministry of Commerce, were present and made speeches at the meeting. Also present at the meeting were over 170 leaders of Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture, State Administration of Industry and Commerce, National Development and Reform Commission, National Silk Office, and cocoon and silk offices, silk associations and major enterprises of provinces in the country.
Mr. Guo Shengkun, briefed on Guangxi’s economic development and the development of silk industry. He said that Guangxi has a favorable geographical location by being in the connection area between west China and ASEAN economic belt and the only west province along the coast. In addition, he said that Guangxi is rich in the resources of minerals, hydropower, forest, agriculture and tourism while enjoying many preferential policies of west area, border area and coastal area. Up to 2005, Guangxi’s mulberry cultivation was 1.4 million mu with a cocoon production of 140,000 tons, which had increased 4.67 and 4.75 times respectively as compared with those in the period of the 9th Five-year Plan. Guangxi has become the largest cocoon producer in the country, accounting for a quarter of the national total. Guangxi will continue its effort to develop the cocoon and silk industry so that it will become a pillar industry in the region, Mr. Guo added.
Mr. Huang Hai said that cocoon and silk industry is our traditional advantageous industry and it has a special position in our national economic development. Silk worm breeding in eastern China has a long history, but with the rapid development of economy in this area, land resources are running short and labor is becoming expensive. On the other hand, silk worm breeding in Guangxi is growing fast and it has replaced Jiangsu and become the large cocoon producer in the country. Ministry of Commerce has decided to implement the “Project to Move Cocoon Production from East to West” so as to ensure the continuous development of cocoon and silk industry and build our country into a strong and modern silk producing country.
