Typhoon Masta caused several ten billion Yuan in losses as it ravaged through east China’s coastal area with strong winds and heavy rain over the weekend. Large areas of farmland under mulberry were damaged.

In Nantong, Jiangsu Province, tender leaves of 200000 Mus(1Mu=1/15 of a hectare) of farmland under mulberry, which accounted for 40 per cent of total area, broken by Typhoon Masta. Thus would inevitably weaken the mulberry leaves output and affect the breeding quantity of autumn silkworm.

In Haiyan, Zhejiang province, more than 40000 Mus of farmland under mulberry were affected. Among them, 18000 Mus were flooded by heavy rain.

In Haining, Zhejiang Province, Typhoon Masta damaged new mulberry trees planted early in the year.

Technical experts advised silkworm farmers to take the following measures despite the setbacks of Typhoon Mata:
1. Cleanup flood water in the fields;
2. Add fertilizer to mulberry fields before August 20 to enhance autumn leaves growth.
3. Scout fields and identify and map any weed infestations and clean them.
4. Increase field management.
